Dark and Edgy Shannety

I liked the results from earlier shoots with Magalie and Shannety using edge lights so much, that I decided to have another go at it with Shannety. A little more light this time. To show the reflective features of the semi-transparent latex blouse from Libidex. I love the atmosphere from the edge light. You’ll be seeing more of these types of images from me in the future.

And who would have thought you could create a little extra je-ne-sais-quoi with 2 bottles of Face Mist?

More Color Gel Experiments

I had used my right light to create a sort of aureola behind model Shannety in an earlier shoot. The next logical step would be to add color gels to that idea. So for these 2 photos, I taped a red color in front of my ring light. And I lit Shannety with 2 different colors obviously.

New Face Jill

Jill is a gorgeous and sweet curvy model I met on one of the castings for Curves Model Agency. As is often the case with new faces, she was in need of pics to get her portfolio started. We scheduled a portrait session late last year. Our goal was to have at least one good head shot to present herself to potential modeling customers.

I asked her to prepare a several of outfits for our photo shoot. If she would feel up to it, would could also do some fashion shots. After she saw, the dark & edgy series I did with Magalie, she asked me if we could do that too. Jill said she had the perfect dress for it. So that is what we did.

Dark and Edgy Magalie

I was experimenting with edge lighting a while ago. Just 1 light, a reflector and lovely Magalie. Did take us too long before we came up with these cool pics.

And then I was thinking to myself: “What would happen if I added a blue gel to my light?” Well, it turns out it adds a little Mystique—you know, the X-Men character played by Rebecca Romijn—to the photos.

Then, one thing led to another and by the end of the shoot, we ended up shooting with 2 gelled lights to produce these pics.

Classical Black & White with Romi

Romi has the looks of a classic ‘50s beauty. She was the perfect model for this classic black & white portrait session.

Saints in Latex

I’ve been exploring the possibilities of my Falcon Eyes FLC-65 ring lamp. Thus far I am quite impressed by its performance. Especially if you consider it only costs around $100.

I already used it as a main light to shoot portraits with Romi. This time I used it as a hair light to shoot angelic portraits with Shannety. A set that was inspired by the album cover of Lauren Jenkin’s No Saint album.

Lennon Stella at La Madeleine

Canadian born Lennon Stella is best known for her role as Maddie Conrad in the ABC/CMT TV-series Nashville. Being born into a musical family—her parents are singer-songwriters—she picked up a guitar at the age of 5. She opened up for The Chainsmokers and even last year for Anne-Marie when she played the Lotto Arena in Antwerp.

Having missed Lennon’s performance in Antwerp last year, I did not want to miss her concert last night. Her soft electro pop is the perfect soundtrack for a relaxed evening. And best of all: I got to see her up close for the 1st 3 songs working as a photographer.

1st Try at #blacktapeproject

I come across amazing photography all the time. I find work by other photographers and models often very inspiring. One such artist is Joel Alvarez. I’ve been admiring his Black Tape Project for many years.

I decided to have a go at it myself. So I started to study his work, bought tape, and some small tests with it. Obviously, I don’t want just copy Joel Alvarez’ work. I want to give it my own little touch. How else but by combining the #blacktapeproject with latex?

I had already added a little touch of tape in a shoot with Jolien. No enough to really call it #blacktapeproject though. When I had Shannety in the studio on a rainy day somewhere last September, we decided to have a go at a something that was closer Joel Alvarez’ #blacktapeproject. We went for black latex lingerie from William Wilde, brand new high heels from Pleaser Shoes and touches of tape.

We learned that is not as easy as it looks to apply the tape. It takes a lot of patience from the model and from me to apply the tape. There’s a couple more things I need to figure out. I am confident however, that I am on the road to something cool.

Wireless Transfer of Photos with Cascable App

So, last summer I bought a Canon Powershot G7X mkII. I have to you a little bit about the reasons why in this blog post. I must say, the camera does not disappoint. I have it with me most of the time and love the image quality it produces.

One of the reasons why I choose the camera was because it has built-in WiFi. Canon provides an app that supports wireless transfer of photos from my Powershot G7X mkII to my iPhone. My workflow is build around Adobe Lightroom. I even import my iPhone photos to Lightroom as you know. My intention was to use Canon’s app to transfer photos to my iPhone, import them in Lightroom, retouch them right on my phone and publish them on my social media.

But much to my disappointment, the Canon app can only handle JPEG photos and I absolutely wanted to work with the RAW files from my Powershot G7X mkII. After my initial disappointment, I set out to find a solution for that little problem and found the Cascable app.

The app is only available for Apple devices at this time. You will need the PRO version, which at $30 isn’t cheap, to transfer RAW files. Being able to retouch RAW files in LR on the go is worth the cost though. The app is easy to use and connects to your camera in a few easy steps. And the PRO version comes with a few nifty extra’s like remote controlling your camera, geotagging, location recording with export to GPX files, etc.

And I have a little trick you could do using the app that is really cool. At least if you shoot wit Canon cameras like I do. Although, this will work with other camera brands too I suppose. I also work with the Canon EOS 5Ds and the EOS 7D mkII. The Powershot G7X mkII is able to read the RAW files from those cameras too. And Cascable will let you transfer those files to your iPhone as well. Make sure you set your Canon EOS camera to record on the SD card if you wanna do this. You can just pop the SD card from your Canon EOS camera in the Powershot G7X mkII, view the photos on the camera’s LCD and transfer them to your iPhone with Cascable.

Summer Nights by the Pool

What can I say? Is it summer yet? All it takes is a throwback to last summer shooting by the pool with Magalie to get me in the mood for warmer weather.
