Food Photography

I like cooking. I like spending time in the kitchen. I find it very relaxing. And after a few years of experimenting in the kitchen, I’m slowly getting good at it. And since I like photography, it’s sort of a given to try and make a good pic of the food I prepare. And the good thing is, I get to eat the food too.

Home Cooked Dinner

I did this pan fried filet of cod with a creme of peas and tarragon, pickled onion and chanterelle mushrooms last week.

Duvel Brewery Photo Receives 6.5K Likes on Facebook

Duvel over the Rainbow

My snapshot of a rainbow over Duvel brewery I took a couple weeks ago has received 6501 likes on Facebook, and got shared more than 12oo times.

I am so trilled about that. It is by far my most successful photo ever. And I am also so happy that Duvel brewery sent me a crate of Duvel to thank me for my smashing photo.

Lucky Shot Turns Hit on Facebook

I was stuck in traffic on my way to a customer yesterday morning. Traffic was dense, it was raining, a couple of accidents on my route. It resulted in a 3:15H drive to Brussels. Somewhere half way, I spotted a rainbow over the Duvel brewery in Puurs. I grabbed my iPhone, shot this picture and posted it on my Instagram. As a tag line, I wrote: “There really is a pot of #gold at the end of the #rainbow #duvel”.

Duvel over the Rainbow

It got picked up by the guys at Duvel. My friend An sent me a message saying Duvel re-posted it on their Facebook page. It turned out to be a big hit too. This morning, my photo had over 5700 likes and more than 1000 shares on Duvel’s Facebook page. Makes my day for sure. This must be my most successful and most popular photo ever. Talk about being at the right place at the right time. I guess that is what you could call serendipity.

Workshop Food Photography

I like to cook. I don’t mind spending half a day in the kitchen to experiment, try new recipes, cook a good plate of food and serve to friends. And I like to take pictures. I’m not claiming I’m good at either of them, but I enjoy it. I’ve been posting snapshots of my dishes on Instagram. So when I saw Centrum voor Beeldexpressie was hosting a Workshop Food Photography, it seemed kinda fun to join that workshop and combine 2 things I like to do.

Asian Spring Rolls

Daphne Aalders of Food For Foodies showed us how to prepare the Asian style dishes. And Regula Ysewijn (Miss Foodwise) gave us tips on how to dress a set for food photography, and dress the plate, light it and shoot it. It turned out to be a fun day with good food and very useful photography tips.

Hard Rock Calling

Our main attraction: Hard Rock Calling! We headed down to Hyde Park this afternoon for a fun filled day of food, drinks and Rock music… Gaslight Anthem, Dave Matthews Band and BRUUUUUUUUUUUCE were today’s headliners.

photo

All you need on a nice sunny day for a concert in the park: a food menu, cocktails and an iPhone to keep the folks at home up to date of what you’re doin’.

Quite an experience actually: we enjoyed Dave Matthews Band from the terrace of the Hard Rock Cafe. We had a couple of drinks and a bite to eat. DMB’s show was superb. Quite possibly the best intro for what was coming.

‘Cause in the end, it’s all about Bruce! Bruce and the Band opened with London Calling. Almost as expected, but certainly something I had hoped for. And after a little disappointment from the show at Pink Pop, I knew this show was gonna be good.

There was a whole bunch of highlights: finally got Youngstown! But also had Trapped, Radio Nowhere and Rosalita. Would have been great if Bruce would have played my double request, but my 2 songs didn’t make it.

Bruce left us with this sign from the audience…

Exposition After-Party

DIFO’s 30th exposition opened yesterday evening. I took my best friends home for a cocktail after-party after the opening.

In a matter of moments, the kitchen looked like a war zone, but nobody seemed to mind. Alain turned out to be a true mojito master. Turns out that most of the mojitos were made with basil instead of mind ’cause Bart doesn’t know the difference between the 2 herbs.

Friends meeting friends. People chatting away everywhere. Models giving make-overs to photographers. Everyone showing off their photos. Springsteen music in the background. Chips… and drinks… lot’s of drinks!

Goin’ on an hour and a half of sleep right now. But it was the best damn cocktail party ever! Thank you guys! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Bollekesfeesten in Antwerp

I went to the Antwerp photo museum with a friend this afternoon. I try to go there a couple of times per year and check out the new expos. I guess it is just an other excuses to see more photos.

Later in the afternoon, we went downtown, and ended up at the Bollekesfeesten. Serveral restaurants had put little stalls all around the Groenplaats. So we stuck around and decided to try some of the food there. And we like good food… So deciding what to try is not easy for us. Glass of Cava, some dim sums and sushi to start with. Main course at restaurant Hokfe van Bazel, a glass of wine and double shot of desserts. And all of a sudden deciding wasn’t so hard anymore.

And good folks of Antwerp, just for the record: I AM NOT GAY!

Restaurant Tip

Lookin’ for a good restaurant in Antwerp? I’ve got a tip for you… Try Bizzie Lizzie. Luc and I just enjoyed dinner there tonight: great food, great service. We made reservations via DiningCity’s Restaurant Week.
